Webinar exploring sauna and the menopausal transition
The British Sauna Society is hosting a webinar on Monday, 2 March at 6:30 PM to examine the relationship between sauna use and the menopausal transition. Led by sauna master Kate Rawson and a panel of practitioners and researchers, the session aims to bridge the gap between anecdotal benefits and scientific evidence. While many women aged 40-60 report that the contrast of heat and cold helps manage symptoms like hot flushes, insomnia, and mood swings, formal research in this area remains limited.
The discussion will address the significant lack of female-specific health research, noting that only 1-5% of global health funding is allocated to studies involving women’s physiology. Current landmark studies, such as those by cardiologist Jari Laukinnen, have historically focused on male participants. The webinar will explore how sauna culture might serve as a preventative health tool and a community space for women navigating hormonal changes, drawing on insights from practitioners like Dr. Kath Jones and reproductive health specialist Dr. Imogen Murray.
The event is open to the public, and membership in the British Sauna Society is not required to attend. Participants are encouraged to submit questions in advance via the society’s Discourse platform to help guide the conversation. The webinar seeks to establish what is needed to produce robust empirical evidence that could verify the health claims currently shared by sauna operators and users across the UK and beyond.
